KFC worker exposes how the gravy is made in viral TikTok video

Between late-night McDonald’s hacks, Chick-fil-A’s secret menu leaks, and Taco Bell workers revealing the restaurant’s notorious bean recipe, KFC is now equally in the mix of fast-food TikTok hype. A viral video on TikTok shows how the fast-food chain’s classic chicken gravy recipe is actually prepared behind the scenes, and spectators are divided on whether to be grossed out or impressed.

The video has been viewed by over 587,000 users and has been shared and liked over 45,000 times on TikTok.

“This is not poop, it’s called crackling (chicken bits that come off while in the fryer and goes to the bottom and then its placed in the fridge),” text reads over the video of the gravy being made. The trending clip uploaded by user @cheddar4.7 begins by zooming in on the crackling, kicking off a step-by-step gravy-making process.

After that’s gathered, warm water is poured on top of the leftover chicken pieces, breaking them up into a liquid substance, which the dry gravy mixture is poured into. Now, the worker is seen mixing it all up, and it begins to look more like the classic gravy viewers are probably familiar with.

From there, the mixture is heated for nine minutes, removed from heat, and mixed some more. The gravy then gets returned to the heat before finally being taken out for straining. Finally, it is labeled and distributed into KFC containers to be stored in warm cabinets for up to six hours, according to the video.

User @cheddar4.7 also shared videos unlocking the allure behind other KFC favorites like the mini fillet burger, chicken fillet strips, the fillet stacker sandwich, and the Krushem milkshake.

KFC divides fans after revealing its secret gravy recipe

KFC has long kept its recipes under a tight lid, but the fast-food chain has finally revealed how it makes its signature gravy – and it’s not what you’d expect.

Currently making its way around TikTok is a clip from a documentary that KFC recently featured in, with an employee showing how she makes the famous gravy.

Take a look at the controversial KCF recipe in the video player above

The British documentary was about life inside KFC’s chains during the Christmas period, and a worker named Ann explained she makes 700L of the brown sauce a week, before revealing the gravy-making process in detail.

And one of the key ingredients to making the gravy? It’s KFC’s “crackling” - otherwise known as the leftovers from the bottom of the chicken fryers.

In the footage, that is now going viral on TikTok, Ann calls it her “lovely crackling”, where she takes it and whisks it into water before she puts it into the microwave.

The clip has been viewed by over 80,000 TikTok users, and has garnered thousands of comments, with the revelation having left viewers shocked - many simply had no idea this was how the gravy was made.

Taking to the comments under the video, fans have shared their reactions to hearing about the recipe for the first time.

“Not having that gravy again,” one user wrote.

Another added: “That really put me off.”

“I am horrified,” said a third.

While the unknown detail has caught viewers by surprise, KFC has since broken its silence on whether or not the “crackling” method was used in Australia.

KFC Australia told NewsCorp that using drippings from roasting pans is a part of traditional gravy recipes.

“Our famous mouth-watering gravy is made the old-fashioned way and is another one of the Colonel’s famous recipes which we proudly serve our customers,” said.

Other viewers have echoed that message, with many also taking to comment under the video that this is how “real gravy” was made.

“Not sure what everyone thought happened when gravy was made,” a user said.

The real deal! They enlisted an expert mixologist to whip up drinks like The Southern Twist (pictured)

How to make KFC's The Southern Twist cocktail

2 teaspoons granulated brown sugar

4 teaspoons dried parsley

To garnish: Parsley and brown sugar rim

To create your parsley & brown sugar rim:

1. Chop the parsley and mix with the brown sugar in a bowl

2. Cut the lemon and coat the rim of the glass with it

3. Dip the rim of the glass into the chopped parsley and brown sugar mixture

2. Pour your KFC Gravy into the glass, give it a mix, and enjoy

'For example, the Kentucky bourbon in The Southern Twist brings mellow, sweet spice notes to stand up against the savory gravy,' he said, according to The Independent. 'The herbal note of parsley on the rim brightens the sip with the brown sugar softening the kick of bourbon and uniting the flavors.'

Besides gravy, bourbon, brown sugar, and parsley, the drink also includes black pepper.

The Finger Lickin' Sour, meanwhile, is made with gravy, mezcal, cherry liqueur, lemon juice, orange marmalade, salt, pepper, thyme, and an egg white.

And the Gravy Mary has gravy, vodka, lemon juice, tomato juice, and a spice mix of Worcester sauce, Tabasco, white pepper, celery salt, paprika, and horseradish cream. It's garnished with celery and popcorn chicken.

'Our fans repeatedly express their love for our gravy, which always sparks ideas within the team,' said Marion Racine, a marketing manager for the brand. 'We know our gravy is good enough to drink — so with stocktails being a real hit at the moment, what better ingredient to take them to the next level?'
